Here is a rare bird, indeed.
Forget your Submariners, Seamaster 300s, and Fifty Fathoms for a moment and feast your eyes on one of the most wondrous dive watches ever made by any brand. The Mido Powerwind 1000 Reference 5907 — referred to by fans as the ‘Rainbow Diver’ — is a highly unique design with a decompression scale printed directly on the dial. However, as you can see, said scale is wildly colorful, making it both easier to use and extremely aesthetically appealing. One doesn’t even need to be a diver to appreciate it — it’s simply a stupidly fun watch!
Produced in numerous iterations in the 1960s, there are ‘Rainbow Diver’ models configured in feet or meters, with and without the date, and in myriad colors. However, despite the potential for a ‘Frankenwatch,’ the example we have here is a good one. A very good one.
This particular Reference 5907 features a 37.5mm stainless steel case, a multi-colored, exotic luminous dial with decompression scale, a signed, original crystal, and a bidirectional, rotating dive bezel. Powered by the automatic Mido cal. 1137 OC movement, it comes fitted to a stainless steel Bonklip bracelet. It’s rare enough to find one of these in any condition, but finding one with an outstanding dial and a strong case with correct parts is a rare occurrence, to say the least.
If you’re a serious dive watch collector, you need this piece in your collection — STAT!
